Exploring the Outer Banks and Kitty Hawk, USA

Thursday, July 25, 2013

After having visited Washington, we decided to deviate from the Route 95 in order to drive along the Outer Banks, a 200 mile or 320 km long string of narrow barrier islands off the Atlantic coast of North Carolina and Virginia.

It's like a ride in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean and our stop was Kitty Hawk, also place where the Wright Brothers had attempted for 4 years in a row to flight for the first time.
The fields of Kitty Hawk display the Wright Brothers Memorial, the museum located in Kill Devil Hills, one of the most famous attractions in this area. The price per person is just 4$.

The museum shows the first aeroplanes, built by the Wright Brothers (here the portrait),

where there's an explanation of the above ranger about the story of what they did and how they built them.

Outside the Wright Brothers National Memorial also shows the runway where the brothers tried to fly with capitals stating their arrival ( with the flight length)

On a little hill there's also the monument with designed wings "in commemoration .

From the hill you can have a "panoramic" view of the area: you can see the other monument, dedicated to the take off ,

and also the fields that made this possible.

Left the Wright Brothers Memorial, our road trip went on: we went to the beach and I saw something particular about these little villages.

The wooden houses are pile-dwellings built against sea storms.

The beaches remind me the one in the region of Zeeland, Netherlands, with dunes built artificially in order to protect the villages and towns from sea storms. Although you could think it's not a popular place, this is one the most popular seaside places of this area.

Left the beach we decided to drive for more than 500 miles or 800 km, along the Outer Banks, their little islands and long bridges. You can see also bridges destroyed by the hurricanes like this one

Travel tips:
  • If you are going to the beach, it's better to choose a day with a better weather, as few days before there was an hurricane that passed not far from the Atlantic Coast;
  • The Wright Brothers Memorial is interesting and it's a nice attraction;
  • You can combine a visit to the memorial with beach activities, but if you are not interested in them, it's a long travel through little islands and bridges.
Where to sleep:
  • Until Kitty Hawk you do not find nothing: after having compared the prices, we found a nice hotel, the Shutters on the Bank, one of the cheapest there: 100$ for 3 persons with fantastic breakfast. large bedrooms and clean bathrooms.
 The next stop of the USA East Coast Road Trip will be Savannah, Georgia.

Hi Kirsten, thanks for the comment! I think that if you find a nice weather it's also nice to relax on the beach! :-)
