The sleepless Miami Beach: the nightlife

Wednesday, September 25, 2013

The exploration of North America can involve also a city's nightlife and the one of Miami is particularly attractive. Well today I'm going to show you in particular the Miami Beach nightlife, as part of the Miami nightlife.

You are now approaching to the sleepless Miami Beach

Follow me!
Let's start from the most touristic area: Ocean Drive.

Ocean Drive is one of the most famous avenues in Miami Beach with its restaurants, cocktail bars and clubs with their Art Deco style. It's always crowded and during the night if you cross all the restaurants and cocktails bars you are stopped by beautiful PR's that normally offer you a discount or a free drink ( this seems to be something used in touristic destnations as well).

This is what you normally see when you walk along Ocean Drive:

One of the most famous cocktail bars and clubs is the Cleverlander, which is also a hotel.

 Will you sleep there? Honestly I'm not that sure...

The cocktails are expensive: you can choose the basic cocktail or a cocktail with extra alcohol ( but not that strong, just medium), then taxes and a 15-18% service tip. The final price for a "complete" cocktail is around 20$: I saw similar prices only along the posh Corso Como, in Milan, Italy.
You pay at the entrance, but we could access to the dancefloor for free thanks to the cocktails ordered.
Music: commercial, disco, house; People: casual, stylish, posh.

Here's another bar along Ocean Drive
Then this is the Mango's Tropical Cafe, a bar where the bartenders also dance, with mixed music depending on the night, shows, bellydancers and mixed people.

Finally, we have been told it was the Giorgio Armani's villa in South Beach, but I could not prove it...

So this was a fast presentation of the Ocean Drive nightlife, but clearly it was too touristic and I wanted also to see where the local people go. So I decided to explore also the other streets, Collins Avenue and Washington Avenue.

Collins Avenue displays many restaurants but it's a not great nightlife spot.

The Miami Beach's nighlife heart is for sure Washington Avenue. The number of clubs displayed by this avenue was really impressive. In a couple of kilometers there were 12-13 clubs: a nightlife paradise.

Let's start from the crowded club, called Bamboo (550 Washington Avenue). This is a posh nightclub at the Paris Theatre space with dressy people and quite expensive entrance. It has been awarded thiw year as one the finest clubs.

The second place was the Hotel Chelsea (944 Washington Avenue), quite posh and dressy too, but not expensive (cocktails for 8$).

Then you will find the Cameo Club (1445 Washington Avenue): expensive - 30$ cover. Trendy club with r n'b, dance, commercial.

A controversial place is the Mansion 360 (1235 Washington Avenue): expensive as the other places in Miami (cover 30$). I was not there but if you read the reviews you find more negative reviews rather than positive ones. It's easy to spend over 100 bucks. Music: hip hop, dance, commercial, house.

A completely different place is the Felt Billiards & Lounge (1242 Washington Av.), where you can relax having a good cocktail or playing pool.

You will also find the temple of hip hop, the SoBe Live, closed this year ( but not last year, as you can see). Entrance 20$: this place will open in a new location. Please check their website for further info.

If you want to chill and relax, the design Skyline Bar & Lounge (645 Washington Av.) with its airline theme.

The last club I want to show you is the Twist (1057 Washington Av.), one of most popular gay clubs. Drinks are cheaper than the average South Beach prices and a customer said: "it's pretty big, with different areas you can poke around in to find one that suits you".

If you need a space for private, special and social events, there's the NoWhere Lounge and Event Space (653 Washington Av.). Please visit the website for more info.

However, Washington Avenue, the street with clubs and lounge bars, offers you a more relaxing spot, the Espanola Way with its restaurants and bars.

Miami Beach Nightlife Survival Kit:
  • Get ready to party, but also to spend a lot of money;
  • You can go to the clubs, but you can spend from 20$ to 40$ to go in, except the lounge bars;
  • Drinks can be expensive: you can spend up to 24$ per single drink and 12$ for a bottle water;
  • The bouncers can be rude and keep you in line for long time;
  • Respect the dress code if a club has some;
  • Sometimes the clubs can be very overpacked.
I hope you appreciated this small Miami Beach Nightlife Guide, as part of the Miami nightlife. It was impressive to see all those clubs and bars in few kilometers and it is really a great spot and Miami can be included in the list of the best nightlife cities of the world. I had only explored the Miami Beach nightlife: what about the entire Miami nightlife?

Please consider that I was there in September, 2012: so please check on the net if some clubs or places have been closed in the meantime.

However, I will definitely recommend you to visit, live and enjoy the sleepless Miami Beach and its fantastic nightlife! In order to convert these feelings into words, the lyrics of "Miami" from Will Smith are the most appropriated:

"Party in the city where the heat is on
All night on the beach till the break of dawn
Welcome to Miami (bienvenido a Miami)
Bouncing in the club where the heat is on
All night on the beach till the break of dawn
I'm going to Miami
Welcome to Miami"
